Today's a sports day.....
But first my terrible lyrics,
Stroke it
Bettie Davis Eyes
Old Town Road
Shot through the heart..
Well just a tribute to the ending of an era.. as both Cristiano and Messi were dumped out of the Champions League and for the first time since 04 neither of them will be in the Quarterfinals. I could be wrong, but it's also unfair for the media and everyone to assume they can pass the mantle of the these two titans of the game to younger players. Yes, Haaland and Mbappe are incredible talents and already highly prolific, but it's not fair to compare or assume they are going to take the place of two of the top 3 or 4 players of ALL TIME! It is not like Messi and CR were good for their time they were legends and completely unique incredible players.
It's like when Jordan retired, everyone tried to emulate and anoint the NEXT Jordan, and how many people failed to never reach remotely the same heights. Yes, their is a chance these kids could be as good and Mbappe certainly has already WON a lot, but that is also a product of the game changing and providing talented players a shot at playing younger and with more regularity.
Quick fact.. there is a stat that shows how many games it took Haaland to reach 100 goals in 146 games, which is absurd for sure, quicker than Messi and CR and Mbappe by a healthy margin..
However if you look at the OG Ronaldo or the true Ronaldo, who was also the only teenager to with the Ballon D'or.. scored 100 goals in his career in 110 games... and even thought he still won a lot injuries cut him down.. I will not go down this rabbit hole again, but I will die on the hill that, pre injury Ronnie was easily the most talented player ever.
He was a beast; it was unfair to everyone else." - José Mourinho, who worked as an interpreter at Barcelona, referred to Ronaldo as "the greatest player I have ever seen in my life", adding, "I have no doubts. Ronaldo is the best my eyes have seen"
